Offer of services

Everyone, I hereby offer my services to anyone that has questions about Insane Journal or wants to customize their journals over here to look all nice and purty. I'll be the first to admit that IJ doesn't have as many options as LJ - plus, the code for the whole site is a little wonky right now as Squeaky just loaded a whole new update and is working out the kinks, leading to problems like the "interests" search  or the FAQ not working as they should. However, it's still quite amenable.

If you check out my IJ, you'll see that I have transferred the Smooth Sailing layout to IJ and found a way to upload a custom stylesheet. It takes some tricks, but I'm more than happy to walk you through it. Got a community you want to set up and make all pretty? I'm no good at creating graphics, but if you've got a stylesheet that you want to transfer, I can help!

Let's get this place going, people!

That's so nice of you! :)

Hey, would it be okay if I post this to my journal? I know there are one or two people on my Flist who might be in need of assistance.
Go ahead!
Thanks! :)
Hi, you don't know me, but I've read a couple of your stories and just found your journal, and I believe my stylesheet on LJ is Flexible squares and I want to use my custom layout on IJ, I was wondering if you could help me?

Thanks so much in advance. :)
I certainly can! Do you have a link to your custom layout? By which I mean, the source code for it. Also, a link to your lovely header graphic?
I modified my layout, but I can give you a link to the original code...

*digs up link*

layout code It's the black and pink one.

And I'm not as worried about the header because I haven't made up my mind if I'm changing it again yet (besides which, right now it's hosted by LJ)

I hate to leave LJ but the new owners are making me very nervous!

(Let me know if you need a link to the header anyway)

Thank you so much for helping me XD
Please check out my journal, I have temporarily changed it into a demo form of your layout and stylesheet: http://stele3.insanejournal.com/

Is that how you want it to look?
It's very close, would I be able to edit the code again? Or would it be easier for me to send you the actual code I'm using? (I mean the edited version) I could upload it as a txt file to the internet if that would help.

Otherwise I might be able to edit it myself if you tell me how to set it up in the first place. I assume that putting the header in place is done the same way.

Wow, I hope I'm not being too difficult!
Not at all! You mentioned uploading the txt file to the internet - I presume, then, that you have a stable website or other location where you can upload files? Because that saves a lot of time.

If you have a txt file of your custom stylesheet (taken from that link you gave to me), then what you need to do is:

1. In Text Edit, go to Save As. Now, instead of saving it as a txt file, you're going to save it as a CSS file.
2. Where it says Save as Type (the default is "Text Document (*.txt)," choose "All Files" from the dropdown menu.
3. In the window that says your File Name, typing .css at the end of your file's name. That will save it as a CSS file.
4. Upload it to your website and copy the file's new web address. I currently have your stylesheet uploaded to my Googlepages site, so I'll give you the link here as an example: http://stele4.googlepages.com/Annabeth.css

Okay, so your stylesheet is saved to the Internetz. Now you need a place to upload it. That means that you need to transfer the basic layout for "Flexible Squares" to your list of available IJ layouts.

The very basic guide that I used to do so is here: http://www.greatestjournal.com/users/musycal_test/1487.html. Bear in mind, this is for GJ, but the only only only thing that you need to change is that in Step 1 you go here instead: http://www.insanejournal.com/customize/advanced/layers.bml

Follow the step-by-step guide there and let me know when you're done and "Flexible Squares" is an option in your IJ Customize dropdown box.
*facepalm* I should have known this beforehand, but I don't have a paid account, so I can't actually change the layout.

I'll have to mem this entry and come back if/when I have a paid account (at the moment I have one on LJ)

I'm sorry to have you go to all the trouble of helping me without realising I needed a paid account.
Ahhhh, alas. That was a stupid assumption for me to make, sorry.

I actually waited for my paid account to run out on LJ before I exported, deleted, and bought one on IJ. So, yeah. I know what you mean.
FWIW, you can still edit the layouts of the basic IJ options with the steps I outlined. For instance, this is a "Free Patient" account that I made (built on the Bloggish layout): http://asylums.insanejournal.com/girlsintheband
I clicked the link you gave me and it tells me I don't have that type of account; how do you edit?
See below. :(
ACK GOD I'M DUMB. YOU CAN TOTALLY DO THIS, WAIT, SHIT.

Okay. Go here: http://www.insanejournal.com/customize/index.bml

Now, see down at the bottom where it says S2? Click on that button.
Ack, wait, cancel that. I just created a test dummy journal, unpaid, and it doesn't have Bloggish as an option.

:( I'm sorry. I think my options for helping you are somewhat limited. If you do find a stylesheet that you like for the unpaid layouts on IJ, I can do that for you.
I desperately need help with layouts and making RSS feeds. It would be lovely if you could help me out.
Sure! What do you need to know?
Um. How do layouts work in IJ? Where can I find some nice layouts that don't require me to have a paid account? And how do you make an RSS feed?
Layouts work pretty much the same as on LJ... because the coding is the same, any layout on LJ will work on IJ. The one caveat to that is the only layouts that IJ OFFICIALLY has loaded right now are:

A Sturdy Gesture
Bloggish
Classic
Clean and Simple
Dear Diary
Digital Multiplex
Disjointed
Generator
Haven
Magazine
Notepad
Opal
Punquin Elegant
Quite Lickable
Refried Paper
Style Contest
Tabular Indent
Unearthed
Variable Flow

However, I can walk you through transferring any of the following LJ layouts to IJ:
3 Column
Flexible Squares
Opal
Smooth Sailing
Tranquility II

And even further, if you can find me the proper CSS coding for any basic LJ layout, I can probably find a way to transfer those, too.

Now, as for stylesheets... I found my stuff on community.livejournal.com/thefulcrum. But any LJ layout community that provides custom stylesheet coding will work.

Tell you what: why don't you tell me what you want your journal to look like, include links that show examples, and I'll help you figure out how to make it happen.

As for RSS feeds: do you want to make RSS feeds FROM your IJ TO Livejournal (i.e. people on LJ see your IJ posts on their flists) or do you want to make feeds FROM someone's LJ TO your IJ flist (i.e. you see their LJ posts on your IJ flist)?
I love the fulcrum. I use layouts from there all the time, mostly for comms. I thought your layouts looked familiar!

I don't have any particular layout in mind - just something simple and nice, maybe something I can make a header for. My current lj layout can be seen here, but I don't want to have the same layout on both sites. Pretty much any layout from thefulcrum is a layout I'd like to have, really.

Erm. Both, actually. Someone asked about the IJ RSS feed and I'd like to be able to just have my flist intact on IJ.
Splitting these up... RSS feeds first.

First of all, do you have a paid account on LJ? If so, then you can go here: http://www.livejournal.com/syn/. There's a place at the bottom of the screen where you can input an http address. Paste your IJ address there and that should create an RSS feed for you. Save the address that it gives you and pass that around.

Then, you will also want to set your feed on "Summary." That way if you have long posts, they won't kill the flists of your friends on LJ (LJ-cuts don't work on feeds).

1. Go here: http://www.insanejournal.com/admin/console/

2. Paste EXACTLY THIS into the box: set for alex_bl synlevel summary

3. Click execute.

NOW. RSS feeds on IJ will be a little trickier, because they, too, require you to have a paid account. If you check my profile, you'll see just under the "Friends" and communities/asylums section, I have a bunch of feeds already created and friended. They say things like "7dazelj," and "bexlessLJ." You can friend any and all of those... or, may I ask, are you planning to leave your LJ in existence? When I left, I deleted mine, so I didn't have this option, but I have heard of a way to actually create an RSS feed of your LJ flist! Transfer the whole thing, lock stock and two smoking barrels.

More on the layout tomorrow. I shall have a few options for you, but I need sleep.
Unfortunately I do not have a paid account. If that means that I can't have an Rss feed, then oh well.
You could ask someone on your LJ flist with a paid account to do it - that's what I wound up doing in the end.
Yeah, I think I'll do that. Thanks!
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=149

At the bottom of the page it talks about that Friends page feed.

The only thing I don't know is if you would have to ALWAYS have a paid account for it to work, or if you could set it up with a paid account and then allow your account to lapse to basic and still have the feed available. That might be something that you have to ask LJ.
One more thing on RSS feeds: there are already a bunch created on IJ - if you look here, you might find some other people that you're looking for.

http://www.insanejournal.com/syn/list.bml
Okay; layouts. How do you feel about "escape is at hand for the traveling man"?

http://stele4.insanejournal.com/
How big is the header that you want to use? If it's 566x207, then "detrone the dictaphone" is good: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v388/grrliz/other/layouts/free/45_fullsizess.png
Both layouts are nice! I actually use the second one for a comm over on LJ and I really like it - I generally make my own headers, so that's not a problem. Um. Yeah?
Well then, that one's pretty easy: set your IJ to S2 mode, select Bloggish as your layout, then under Custom Options go to Custom CSS and copy/paste thefulcrum's CSS code for that stylesheet into the big blank box.

thefulcrum also has a few other instructions to follow re: sidebar and header.

If you want more options with the header (like ones that come with Flexible Squares, that does require a paid account on IJ. If you get one, though, I can totally help you import Flexible, Mixit, or any other layout sheet you can find.
You're a gem, stele! I spent hours trying to find a good layout that didn't use Smooth Sailing or Flexible Squares because of IJ's sad lack of those templates, so if you have tricks, you're my favourite! Can I suggest a screenshotted guide? If you don't want to do this, I possibly will, I learn by seeing, so :)
Alas, to get the Smooth Sailing and Flexible Squares you have to be a paid member. However, may I recommend community.livejournal.com/thefulcrum as an excellent place for options? They have some excellent layouts for "Bloggish," which is available to Free Patients.

http://community.livejournal.com/thefulcrum/tag/02.+style:bloggish

Choose something from there and I will tell you how to upload it!
*sigh* I'm so fussy, I'm looked all through the fulcrum and my other favourite LJ layout makers, but anything for Bloggish etc is too much... stuff, or a fixed width which screws up with pictures and guh, like I said, fussy. I may have to cave and buy paid IJ once my LJ time runs out.
Well, if/when you do, let me know and I'll help you upload any Flexible Squares or anything else your heart so desires. :)
Hi! I tried to upload one of the styles from community.livejournal.com/thefulcrum to my IJ, but it's kinda...wonky. The sidebar and sidebar image is out-of-whack, a la this:

Photobucket

The rest of the sidebar is way down the bottom of my journal, which kinda sucks to say the least. Any idea on how to fix it?
When you uploaded it, did you copy and paste the stylesheet into the "Paste stylesheet here" box, or did you use the small box right above it that says "Custom stylesheet URL"?
The first one...copied and pasted all the technobabble. There didn't seem to be a URL to use... 8/
*headdesks*

Uh...not to worry. I figured it out. Thanks for the help!

*is an idiot*
You actually have to to upload and create the URL to paste in. Do you have a website that you can upload files to? If not, I would suggest getting a Googlepage? They're free and seriously easy to use.

Let me know if/when you've got a website, and I'll tell you how to proceed from there.
*waves* Hey, you.
Hey hun! Do you need help with stuff?
I probably will later. I'll have to set everything up later -- right now I'm just letting you know that I'm here and will likely slowly be making the transitiony thing over. I have to shower and get ready for class. Blah.
I'm bookmarking this post in case I'm forced to move to IJ completely. I'm pretty proficient with Flexible Squares (I've been using it for three years after all :-) but I don't know if I'll manage to port it all by myself.
Cool beans, just let me know whenever you need help.
I actually found the information I needed by browsing the comments to this post, but I wanted to thank you anyway. (Next up: I actually read the Spencer/Ryan manifesto I came over here to read.)
Hooray! Smooth Sailing is the layout I use on LJ. Goss told us you were willing to help with customization, and it's good to know you're here if I have questions. I'm not doing any big redecorating now, but do you know how to change the userinfo icon so I don't have to stare at tweak's twitchy face on my journal and flist?
